Still not having to travel with a phone AND an iPod will make it easier getting through security checkpoints.
So this is a big deal and Apple changed their name from Apple Computer to just Apple - probably can do that now they recently settled their financial terms with the Beatles over use of the name 'apple.'
Jobs demoed iTunes with Beatles albums. _________________ Where in the world is Robb?
I need one of those. I need one BAD. I dont' even surf the web on my cell phone!
You don't even have to press a button to change it from portrait to landscape view -- just turn the phone, and IT JUST KNOWS.

This is really fantastic, y'all. It completely cuts through the issues most phones have with dealing with text and photos ... to the point where it's ridiculously easy to deal with video. Among other things: This essentially kills text messaging by completely eliding the difference between it and e-mail. No more thumb-typing on a tiny keyboard. _________________ Rob Weir

This thing is worth it, but man, Cingular-only? Cingular's expensive and I like T-Mobile just fine.
Oh, and I just bought a RAZR. Putney told me not to do it, even though my old phone was breaking. Now I feel like I couldn't agree with him more. _________________ [-,-] Stoic boy, you're far from home
This is what I've been waiting for ... the all-in-one. Haven't we all?
It does start out 8GB at $500 ... we all know we want more than 8GB.
Or I need to rethink how I use this little critter. Is it necessary for me to carry around all my photos? No. All my songs and podcasts? No.
O.K., when does it come out? I want one.
Oh, wait:
I'm not keen about ... but it might be addressed ... the small keyboard. Yeah, they're common. But is it possible to add a collapsable keyboard, like what is available for the PalmPilot?
Do we have to go with Cingular? Maybe at first. It's a software brand compatibility issue.
With those thoughts, I'm gonna do my usual "wait and see." We've got our wonderful 17-inch MacBookPro to keep us satiated for awhile.
Dang these iPhones are cool. Way cooler than Palm's now ancient LifeDrive or that ROKR or that silliness Apple brought out last year.
Gimme at least 40GB of memory and I'm all over it. I'm floored to see this thing, but I've gotta ask if this will really replace personal computers. I don't see that happening.
It looks like a great device. It's portable, it's great for flying, it's intuitive (anything Apple does is, though — why can't the PC people figure this out?), and if it runs all Mac OS software... just hook it to the right peripherals and you can fire up Illustrator on it. (Right?)
Flash memory, though? If it's as loopy as my last flash drive was (it died just hanging on my keychain), I'd be worried.
Just hope it multitasks better than my Treo 650. _________________ I've upped my standards — now, up yours.

Which makes me wonder, when will we see the Beatles' catalogue in the iTunes Store?

I'm actually a little worried about that last bit. Will it have some sort of "plane-safe" mode so we can use its non-phone functions on an airplane, or will it be banned during flight like regular cellphones? _________________ "I used to compete in sports a lot. What's cool is the SIM card makes it more universal - assuming that you will be able to buy an unlocked version.
Flying. I can tell you that the mesage they give during boarding is that ALL electronic devices must be switched off. (But if you use black earphones and tuck that iPod in your pocket - rarely will you have to listen to the disgusting sounds people make during 'boarding'. Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.) I almost never get told to take the cans out.
Battery life is an issue - got to watch that one. Memory cpapcity is same as their top-selling model.
This is the phone that Apple REALLY wanted to release - last year we saw the phone that some executive ordered a marketing group within Motorola to release.
The difference in vision betweeen that unit and this one is profound. The entire APPLE experience is included in this baby.
And the RAZR is a good phone, Ernie. You can sync it to your OSX address book via bluetooth and put in custom ringtones and graphics via bluetooth - it's a great phone. It's A BIT FRAGILE but otherwise it networks well.
And, you can get it in pink - which I know is important to some of you. _________________ Where in the world is Robb?
This is awesome, but I really think 8GB is much too small for this thing. I have more music than that on my iPod now — and this is supposed to replace my iPod. Of course, I don't listen to all of that music, and I could certainly weed it out, but add a couple of movies to the mix, and you're already overloaded.
I agree — give me 40GB and I'm all over it. Oh, and a 12-hour battery. At least.
