This announcement has been a long time coming. But here ya go…
Paul Wallen, the mega-award-winning managing editor for Visuals at the mega-award-winning Lewiston (Maine) Sun Journal (circulation 36,000), is moving to the sunny clime of San Diego, where he’ll design sports pages for the Union-Tribune.
Under Paul’s guidance, the Sun Journal earned an incredible 22 awards in this year’s Society of News Design contest. Paul’s young protégé, Megan Lavey, won six herself.
| Quote: | I'm really proud of the visuals team at the Sun Journal and the work we've done together over the last three years. It was a very difficult decision to leave, especially with the great support I've had from editor Rex Rhoades and so many others in Lewiston.
A young Paul Wallen. Very young. In fact, this picture may be Civil War vintage, I think.
However, one of the things I've really enjoyed during my time here is the chance to dabble in sports design. That experience has rekindled my love for working with sports content, all these years after starting out as a sports writer and sports editor at a small daily in Marshall, Texas. It has been on my mind for quite a while that if I could just pick the one thing I have the most fun doing, it would be sports design.
So I'm very excited about the opportunity to focus on the craft of sports design in a terrific city like San Diego. |

Paul expects to work on sports section covers, display pages and special sections. He begins work April 24, but his wife – a kindergarten teacher – will stay behind until the end of the school year. She’ll sell the house in Maine and follow Paul in June or July.
Before he became managing editor for visuals in Lewiston, Paul was a design editor at the Baltimore Sun (2000-03), a designer at the Lexington Herald-Leader (1998-2000), a designer for The Virginian-Pilot (1997-9 a design editor for a chain of suburban papers near Chicago (1996-97) and a graphics editor for the Evansville (Indiana) Press (1994-96). Before that, Paul was sports editor of the Marshall (Texas) News Messenger (1991-94) and a journalist for the U.S. Navy. He was stationed right here in Norfolk from 1987 to 1991.

| Quote: | My true motivation for this move lie in my desire to follow in the footsteps of my sensei, Dallas Morning News sports designer Rob Schneider. I hope that years of training at Rob's feet have prepared me for the challenge of full-time sports design.
Of course, Rob chose to work in Dallas. There's no ocean in Dallas and it's brutally hot there all summer, unlike the "perfect" climate in San Diego. Dallas has no palm trees, mountains, beaches or miles of beautiful coast line. But, um, you know, I still think Rob is a smart guy and all. |
Here’s offering the very finest of happy wishes for the most excellent Paul Wallen. Best of luck in San Diego, my friend!
Meanwhile, the Sun-Journal actually posted Paul’s position a few weeks ago. If you’re interested in following in the footsteps of Tim Frank and Paul Wallen, click here:
