Christopher Boyd of the Orlando Sentinel reports today:

Quote:
Orlando Sentinel Communications Co. announced plans today to launch three free weekly newspapers in western Volusia County.

The papers -- the DeLand Current, Deltona Current and DeBary/Orange City Current -- will carry local news, feature stories and neighborhood information. They will debut Oct. 8.

Orlando Sentinel Communications, publisher of the Orlando Sentinel, plans to employ a separate news staff for the papers, which will be distributed to about 50,000 households.

Rapidly growing western Volusia has become a publishing battleground in recent years as the Sentinel and the Daytona Beach News-Journal compete for readers and advertisers there.

The papers will have an editorial staff of two.

Bo, this sounds interesting (business-wise, not design-wise). Got any insight into the approach or goal for this?

Well, the goal is total market product, capturing smaller niche advertisers who can't afford to buy ad space in the main run or our zoned product. Volusia County is a very competitve market, and we don't want to concede any part of its readership. Most of the content is intensely local micro-journalism: chicken dinners, school menus, little league scores, neighborhood profiles, those kind of things. They're staffed and produced compeletly separate from the Sentinel, though their business operations are entwined with parent company Orlando Sentinel Communications.
