Megan, this would probably be a "NO BRAINER" in Europe or SA. It's only here where we have to qualify something as exceptional and interesting as this page. Its fun, eye-catching, and creative without being salacious or embarassing.

And even then, some folks would find it offensive.

I think one of the problems that newspapers have is that they don't have enough of a sense of humor these days. Or maybe everyone's so worried about being politically correct that you forget to have fun with situations like this.

What if two guys designed it? Would the reaction on here and in the PD newsroom have been different?

I really like this illustration.
It is clever; it is funny; and it tells us something.
Last time I checked, this is what we are supposed to be doing.

I was in Europe when the Monica Lewinsky scandel broke. Most poeple across the Atlantic wondered why we made such a big deal about it.

If you read the comments on the Plain Dealer's NPD page, you will discover that they had very few complaints.

(My favorite was someone who simply said, "Nice bulbs.")

Just noticed the NPD response. It's good to know that you can get away with something like that in Cleveland

Actually, we get away with an awful lot here in Cleveland. Our editor, Doug Clifton, encourages us to take "intelligent risk." We showed this to him in the idea stage ... he was comfortable with it, because he recognized it as clever, tasteful and most importantly, right on point to the story. That's what our readers recognized as well.

Readers don't always like our decisions, but I think it would be a far more egregious sin if we didn't challenge them from time to time. That doesn't mean we should go out of our way to do insult them just for the sake of doing so, but we shouldn't shy away from challenging most because of a possible reaction from a few.

And ultimately, I refuse to let the possibility of a handful of negative phone calls and e-mails (we only got two, btw) hobble thoroughbreds like Andrea Levy and Staci Andrews. Their work is stellar.

So why don't more papers try things like this? Because as a rule, American papers tend to edit for the lowest common denominator, which adds up to a fraction of our potential. It is both fascinating and sad that an industry which trades in intellectual capital willingly stops product development by not having the spine to support creativity.

For me, it wouldn't had been different. It would had still been a witty, intelligent and well-design package.

That's really creative and very nicely done. The only part I'm the tiniest bit hesitant about is that tangled cord... having the cord just end there with the plug might've been a bit less suggestive (not to mention neater, since the plug itself doesn't seem to fit in there as nicely).
