Illustrator/Designer/Lecturer/Rock Star Martin Gee of the Chicago Tribune and Chicago RedEye is moving back to his native California to work at the San Jose Mercury News.
“This will allow me to complete my childhood dream of one day working for Dean Singleton,” says Martin.
Just kidding.
Here’s the announcement from Stephanie Grace Lim of the Merc:
| Quote: | Folks,
We could not be more pleased to announce that Martin Gee is joining the features design and illustration staff of the Mercury News. He starts here in June.
Martin is a force in the industry, known for his amazing conceptual work and ridiculously creative designs. Martin comes to us from the Chicago Tribune, but many of you will remember him from his long-ago internship at the Mercury News when he worked on the still-young Eye section.
Martin spent the last year art-directing on RedEye, the Trib's youth product, and has also worked on the main features and business sections at the paper. He's been a rock-n-roll design type for House of Blues in Los Angeles, and a superstar at the Orange County Register.
Martin is a well-known speaker at places like SND, Poynter and AAJA for his high-energy presentations, his hatred of bad PhotoShop techniques, and his love of ninjas. You can check out his work on his personal site at:

We're working on Martin's exact start date and getting all that Human Resources stuff done, but it looks like his first day will be June 12. He replaces Tracy Cox.
Please join me in welcoming spikey-haired Martin back to the Mercury News!
:-)

Martin is famous for having one of the most unusual portfolios ever posted at News Page Designer. If you’ve not seen it, check it out here:

…And then, as Steph says, check out his real portfolio at his Web site:

Martin has worked for the Trib a little more than a year. Before that, he spent four years working for the House of Blues and, before that, three years at the Orange County Register. He had interned at the Miami Herald and, yes, the San Jose Mercury News as a student at San Jose State University.
So this is a chance for Martin to go home.
Now, anyone who saw Martin speak at SND/San Jose (2004) or at SND/Houston (2005) or has been around VizEds for any length of time knows all about Martin. So I don’t have to tell you he’s one of the more innovative, creative and talented illustrator/designers around. His work is downright incredible.
Despite that, my favorite Martin Gee creation is the Sudoku ninjas he created a while back:
Martin’s own words:
| Quote: | | The Sudoku Ninja is a character I created for RedEye. He’s my baby. Inspiration: Sanrio, Hello Kitty, anime (especially super-deformed), comics, video games, Japanese and Chinese martial arts movies, vinyl toys, old sci-fi, basically everything. I’d like to see him made into a vinyl toy and other merchandise. An occasional comic strip just started. I hope he’s not the only thing I’ll be known for. Truthiness: I suck at sudoku. I can only solve one star puzzles and occasionally a two star. |
Golden stuff. Just golden.

Martin: Best wishes, my friend. May you find happiness in San Jose.
Let’s hear it, folks: Show some love for the G-man! _________________ -Charles
