The KC Star today has a four-color, four-column ad ABOVE a news story on page 3A, with a tagline that says "Kansas City Star Billboard Advertising -- call this number" blah blah blah. Is this happening at other places and I've just missed it?

What's next -- sponsored stories?

Does anyone have a copy of this they could post?

I expect we'll all be hearing about more "Creative Ad Units" in the coming year... "goalposts" anyone?

I can get one posted tomorrow. I'm not at work now, but it's not the greatest thing in the world. I don't have a problem with the ads themselves, just the execution.

And they should be running nearly every day on pages 3, 5 or 7.

gooch.

Gooch -- Is it a KC thing or a Knight-Ridder thing? Do designers have any say where they go, or are you left with that weird two-column hole down the left and sandwiched four-column hole on the right?

At my old paper (MediaNews with Gannet roots) we had "ear" ads that were business card sized at the top right of each section cover-to the right of the flag ala USAToday. usually ugly and BRIGHT, but hopefully expensive.

Scripps had those in Stuart. . .but at least they didn't take up extra real estate (because that part of the flag is wide open anyway) or make awkward holes.

Honestly, text under an ad on an inside page? Sounds like a clusterf*ck to me. Oh well, can't really complain if it's paying your salary. . .

Last year, Google bought some banner ads (6 col, 1 1/2 inch) for our paper and wanted them run at the top of the page, but we said they had to go at the bottom and they said fine. They bought the ads through 360 Youth, I think.

Joy: I'm not sure if this is a Knight-Ridder thing or a KC Star thing. But, it's going to be in that position all the time.

I personally think, if done well, these can be effective and only slightly intrusive (slightly being the operative word). But, being a 27 year old, I'm used to this kind of stuff. I expect to see this kind of stuff. And it really doesn't bother me as much as it bothers some people in KC.

But, I'm cynical and view everything as an advertisement. Also, if it helps generate revenue for our paper ... well, we'll see.

Also, the newsdesigner is there. www.newsdesigner.com

(I edited this to include something I forgot...)

It's not ideal - but if it pays the bills ...

I'll play devil's advocate here. Evil or Very Mad What's wrong with the ads? They bring in much needed revenue for the paper. They are highly visible, so I assume they are sold at a premium rate.

Is it just that it's something we haven't seen in print - so we immediately point to it as a sign of the decline of civilization?

Thoughts?

Funny, Jeff Randall and I were just talking about this last week.

Honestly, I love the idea if executed properly. And I think proper execution means it has to be an ad that is going to help sell the paper as well as generate ad revenue. I'm talking about coupons.

If I saw a coupon for say a cheap meal at a restaurant, free coffee, bagels, movie tickets, cheap music (itunes or cds) or concerts I think reader and customers would be given additional incentive to buy the product. I think this format would best work in street additions in major metros, but it could be tailored for smaller publications as well. Leave the ads at the bottom for home delivery cause I don't think they have the same impact.

Don't get me wrong, asthetically, I do prefer a clean news front without ads, but we must think of the products we produce as utilitarian vehicles for information. Advertising is useful info for readers because readers are consumers. But I think we must find balance between the two for of communication AND we must be sure that the two are clearly separated.

Ever look at a news paper from the 19th century? The front is full of useful information. News, ads and classifieds are all present. I have a page from New England hanging wall dated 1849. Amazing stuff.

I'm not saying we should revert to a design from the 1800s, but I do think we can examine the philosophy and be more open to apply it in the 21st century.

my thoughts, as archaic or progressive as they might be.
