A memo passed on at Poynter from publisher Kathy Waltz:

Quote:
Here at the Sentinel, we eliminated 33 open positions and separated 21 employees from throughout the company today. Those employees leaving the company will receive separation benefits. As our products continue to evolve to meet our readers' and advertisers' needs, our work and staffing levels have changed. We have identified areas where work could be done differently, consolidated or stopped altogether. We also have some retirements and other voluntary departures. In some of these cases, we will not fill the positions as a means to achieve further cost savings.

Separated? That's gotta be the best euphemism for kicked out on the street I've ever heard.

"Separated" is a word you hear in the military when an enlisted person leaves after his/her enlistment ends. I've never heard it in this context before, but I didn't take note until Emmet said that....

It really sucks here today. Its very gloom. We lost six people in the newsroom, including a really good page designer and a really good graphic artist...not for performance issues, but because we are eliminating sections.
I can't stand the word separated. It would sound more humane if they just said layoffs. My husband has been laid off twice in the past, and using the word "separation" just adds insult to injury.

This was rather sudden, wasn't it? I mean, the Inky lost 75 people in the newsroom (all technically voluntary), but we had a month or two to get ready ...

Publisher Kathy Waltz sent an e-mail Nov. 16 warning of cuts, and there are a few threads here that have been talking about it since then. Some warning, though not much. No one knew exact number of jobs or people until yesterday.

Philadelphia had more notice because they offered buyouts, something Tribune corporate decided not to do at its non-union papers.

"Separated" is a legal term that has to do with the kind of documentation involved in severance for these employees. It may sound euphemistic, but it's acutally legal language that offers greater salary continuation and benefits extension than "laid off." Our severance was more generous here than many of the buyout terms I've seen offered in other organizations.

As someone who was intimately involved in this grueling process for quite some time, I'd like to go on the record as saying these difficult decisions were made in an atomsphere of extreme humanity and deep, agonizing thought with an emphasis on granting as much dignity as possible to those who would be leaving us. To say they were "kicked out on the street" is an unfounded cheap shot against the newsroom leaders who fought tooth and nail to save as many positions as possible. Several newsroom jobs were rescued in the final hours due to those efforts, which is why an exact number was not announced earlier.

Those of you who work in newsrooms where staff reductions have occurred know what a miserable event it is, and I'm certainly not going to spin it any other way. Yesterday was the worst day in my professional life, and we're all entitled to feel sad, angry and disenchanted by that. But I'm still extremely proud of the team we've assembled here, and I'm looking forward to the upward climb going forward.

No lawyerly words ever salve the wound of not being to allowed to leave under your own power.

Thanks for taking the time to explain your situation and fighting to keep your redesign momentum going.

It's nice to know the vizeds community cares....I've gotten several emails from people saying they have openings and to pass the info on to the ones that got laid off.
Sorry if I hadn't responded to your private messages. I tried! I am having trouble with my messages and my replies go to my outbox and seemingly live there forever. I can't seem to get them to work.
If you messaged me and haven't gotten a reply, try emailing me again. I promise I am not ignoring you!

Say, if it helps. I'll share my resources for finding affordable health insurance coverage.

It's a big worry if you suddenly find that your job was 'eliminated', I know - I was in that troupe in 2001.

Being self-employed today, I can tell you mitigating health care was one of the big factors in making the leap.

COBRA is way too $$$ and if you've been suddenly separated from your regular paycheck you may be wondering WTF? How am I going to afford health insurance?

Here's a resource to research . . . I found them through ASCAP Sue me - I'm a publishing member because I own an indie recording label.)

Ehealthinsurance
---> ehealthinsurance.com

They offer all the flavors of Blue Cross PPO (Which I am on right now) including the Blue Edge HSA (Health-savings account)
