A memo leaked overnight from Steve Dorsey of the Detroit Freep:
| Quote: | I'm very sad to report that Chris Clonts is leaving the Free Press to become the assistant design director for news at the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Since he arrived in Detroit almost 10 years ago, Chris has made his mark in almost every Free Press department. He started as a copy editor where he helped the U-Desk transition from paper and wax paste-up production to QuarkXPress/Atex pagination (back when it was state-of-the-art). "He was awesome... our own personal adviser on how to make our Macintoshes work," said Julie Topping. "We were ignorant and he led us to the light."
He next worked in Sports, where our Georgia Peach offered southern solidarity to Alabama native Owen Davis. Chris became known for having an, um, interesting sense of humor - appreciated and annoying at the same time, sources in Sports say.
Chris then shifted to business design and quickly became the deputy design director for news. He also regularly guest-hosted as news editor. Chris has been involved in many of our best and most lauded packages over the years. Some of his most memorable include the development of the CFPs and a string of interns who left appreciative of his coaching.
As a manager, Chris often addressed tedious or messy details related to production, zoning, personnel, or other matters. But he always tried to relate them to their impact on the journalism and worked to ensure the best paper possible for readers.
Chris helped lead the satellite desk in Brighton the night of the big 2003 blackout. He coordinated with at least four off-site papers where the paper was eventually printed. Chris helped forge an emergency production plan on-the-fly that would ensure readers received the Free Press.
"The thing I'll always value most about the Free Press is that we consider a journalist to be a journalist no matter what your specialty. Adhering to that philosophy, we allow people to prove the theory by trying different things," Chris said. "People may think it's BS, but I've been humbled and honored to work here with so many people who care so much about the paper they put on the street every day."
"It's the people and the news I'll miss. The potholes, Tigers and Lions? Not so much."
Although a few know Chris' passions for NASCAR, music from bluegrass to punk, nonfiction books and politics, few are aware of his prowess as an online X-Box racer and his prolific dealing of death on Halo 2. When he leaves, we know we can at least stay in touch with him online -- just look for the person gunning for you named "Red30."
When the news designers learned of his pending departure, Joe Cybulski was first to say he had an important question.
"Can we keep Kathleen?" he asked, referring to asst. NW editor Kathleen (Knauss) Clonts.
Chris smiled, but said nothing.
"I always thought I was moving farther north with every job and that after this one I'd end up in Canada. But clearly, not quite."
Close enough, Chris.*
Please join us in wishing Chris well as he helps Minneapolis launch their long-awaited "experience paper" redesign. His last day at the Free Press will be Sept. 22.
* From 1961-1990, the mean (average) January high in Minneapolis/St. Paul was 20.6 degrees Fahrenheit; the mean low was 2.6. [Source: About.com]

Congratulations, Chris, on your move to the Strib.
I remember that "101 cars" cover... I was at the 100th anniversary bash in Dearborn (some of you know I'm a Ford guy), and it was an absolute ball. Musta been more than 100,000 of us there. Anyway, that weekend, there was some neat stuff in both papers... that said, I've gotta tell you all that the Freep is --> easily <-- the best-looking paper in Motown. Or was, under KR (sorry).
Best wishes. _________________ I've upped my standards — now, up yours. |
