Have to agree about the Red Streak -- more than a little bit callous. In a similar vein, the London Daily Telegraph ran an 'It's lovely and sunny in England but they have hurricanes in the US' page one. What were they both thinking?

Damn - I just noticed that, too Mark - That was a great service - didn't realize it was no longer valid.

Thanks

It looks like a lot of papers led with a horizontal flood photo on day two.

Like below:

Here are some other distinctive covers:

Thanks, Yuri. Anyone else have the "bodies on page one" discussion? We're going to see a lot more of those pictures....

No problem. For youngins like me it was easy to digest. There's nothing like picture stories.

Hi, I designed the CATASTROPHIC page of The Times-Picayune, which was our Day 1 coverage, as well as the GROUND ZERO page you can view at www.newspagedesigner.com

I was the only designer on staff who did not evacuate ahead of Hurricane Katrina, and we sort of deputized a new staff of people to help produce pages, and I supervised things and continued to design several pages including the fronts.

These past few days have been ... overwhelming to say the least. I finally got sleep last night, and I am taking a few days off to separate myself from this for a while. The entire staff has been relocated an hour away, and designers are starting to return, so I feel like I can take a break.

One of my regrets is that we were not able to produce graphics during those first couple of chaotic days. But you work with what you've got -- and the deadlines you're given. We usually had about 3 hours to produce the pages.

I have few belongings, no car, I don't have much to return to in New Orleans, and it could be months before we are allowed back in, so I am happy to entertain offers from other newspapers. I feel it is time to move on.

In particular, I'd like to work in the Northeast at a major daily. I consider myself a newspaper renaissance man, I have served as a designer and copy editor, and my work is solid. And deadlines? Forget about it. Once you've been through this, well, there's just no deadline pressure that can compare. Please contact me at davidbaker66@hotmail.com, and I'd be happy to tell you more about my qualifications.

P.S., Robb, didn't you used to work at The Times of Northwest Indiana? If so, you interviewed me a few years ago before I joined The Times-Picayune. This is a great site, and keep up the good work.

There were some amazing pages designed around compelling and emotional images and stories. I am always in awe to be able to do this job and I am honored that the Daily Breeze page I did was included in this group.

Even though we are in L.A., not LA, we are thinking of our colleagues at the T-P and the other papers in the region. Be safe and well. You are an inspiration.
